Training: Application of Nanofertilizers in Greenhouse Crops

Published at: 11 September 2023

Investigators from the Málaga campus of the Industrial University of Santander (UIS) provide training to undergraduate and graduate students in Chemical Engineering.

The master's student Karen Viviana Amorocho Cubides and the undergraduate students Angélica María Niño Gómez and Nathalia Isabel Guerrero Pacheco from the Chemical Engineering program at the Industrial University of Santander, Bucaramanga campus, visited the Livestock and Agroforestry Conversion Laboratory under the supervision of researcher Julián Mauricio Botero Londoño. This visit to the municipality in the Santander region aimed to enhance their knowledge of the application of nanofertilizers in greenhouse crops. It is worth noting that the nanofertilizers used were nanostructured by the students in the laboratories of the Guatiguara Technology Park at UIS.

The training, which lasted approximately one week, allowed them to become familiar with and experimentally implement the methodology used by the research team for cultivating and applying nanofertilizers under greenhouse conditions. Some of the topics covered included soil homogenization, tray filling, pH monitoring, soil liming, seed planting, among others.

Among the topics covered, the importance of soil preparation and maintaining a balanced pH was emphasized, leading to the acquisition of soil conditioning techniques before seed planting. Furthermore, conditions for fertilizer application were studied.

It is anticipated that during a subsequent visit, the students will learn to use the laboratory equipment for bromatological analysis, biomass measurement, dry matter, organic matter, protein content, nitrogen, and carbon analysis.
