Biography

Agricultural Engineer and Master in Horticulture from the University of Talca, Chile. Doctor in Horticulture specialized in genetic improvement of plants, from The University of California, Davis, United States. She has worked as a plant geneticist for 15 years, in cereal genetic improvement programs in Chile. Since 2006, she has led the INIA National Rice Genetic Improvement Program. She has released 3 varieties to the market, two of which cover more than 80% of Chile's rice surface. Currently her lines of research are focused on the genetic and molecular characterization of abiotic stresses that limit national rice production. Increased tolerance to cold, sustainable and intensive rice cultivation systems and efficient use of water are the problems that she currently addresses through conventional research tools and also with next-generation molecular tools (NBTs). Some scholarships and awards that she has received are: CONICYT scholarship for a master's internship at the National Center for Biotechnology, Autonomous University of Madrid. Spain, IRRI-INIA Scholarship for research internship at International Rice Research Institute, Los Baños, Philippines, William G. and Kathleen Golden International Agricultural Fellowship for Young Rice Researchers, Henry A. Jastro Research Scholarship Award, and Young Investigator Award in The Third International Symposium on Rice Science in Global Health. ISRSGH 2018. Kyoto, Japan, among others.
