Biography

Oscar Mario Paredes Cárcamo is an Agronomist Engineer from the Faculty of Agronomy of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. University of Concepción, in Chillán. He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Genetics, University of California, Davis, Master of Science (Genetic Mention). University of California, Davis, and Master of Science. Michigan State University (MSU), East Lansing.

In addition, he has completed advanced courses at the Osaka Prefectural University, Japan; International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, ICARDA. Aleppo, Syria; International Center for Tropical Agriculture, CIAT, Cali, Colombia.

Since 1976 he was a Researcher in the Legume Program, and from 1995 to 2009 he established and built the INIA Quilamapu Biotechnology Laboratory with an FNDR project. He was in charge of said Laboratory until 2009.

His research areas have been: 1) Genetic and breeding in legumes, 2) Plant biotechnology of various species (Micropropagation, Temporary Immersion System and molecular markers), 3) Rice Improvement. 2010-2016, 4) Evaluator of Fondecyt, CORFO, FONDEF. ISI Magazines, and others., 5) Production of seeds and conventional crops.

Since 1997 he has participated as Director or Deputy Director and Researcher in 40 competitive research projects, from national and international funding sources: FONDECYT REGULAR, FONDEF, FONDEF IT, INNOVA CHILE, FIA, FONTAGRO, FDI-CORFO, INNOVA BÍO BÍO, GENERATION CHALLANGE PROGRAM and FNDR.

From 2009 to 2014 he served as INIA's National Head of International Cooperation. In addition, he has been Director of the Department, Head of R + D + i programs, Technical Advisor to the National Director of Research-Development of INIA, Professor in the country's Faculties of Agronomy, in the Master's and Doctorate Program in Agronomic Sciences. From 2010 to 2016 he was National Coordinator of the Rice Research Program based in INIA Quilamapu, Chillán.
